Dormagen – ARLANXEO, one of the world’s leading suppliers of synthetic elastomers, is producing more than 10,000 liters of hand sanitizer in Dormagen, thereby contributing to the society as a whole’s endeavors to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

The disinfectant will be donated to the town of Dormagen, where ARLANXEO Deutschland GmbH is based. “We want to do our bit locally in Dormagen, where we have our largest site in Germany, and help to minimize the risk of infection,” says Stefan Rittmann, managing director of ARLANXEO Deutschland GmbH. “Especially in these challenging times, what’s needed is swift and unbureaucratic help. We were therefore more than happy to make our production capacities available at short notice in order to produce and donate hand sanitizer.”

Disinfectants are in great demand. “In particular in the phase of the lifting of restrictions as has just been introduced, compliance with the hygiene rules has an important part to play in combating the coronavirus,” emphasizes Erik Lierenfeld, mayor of Dormagen.

The disinfectant is being produced at the ARLANXEO pilot plant at Chempark Dormagen. The plant normally works on process and product developments for the ARLANXEO research laboratories and production plants. While disinfectant production is easy for the staff at the pilot plant to realize in technical terms, a number of challenges first had to be overcome before production of this unusual product for ARLANXEO could commence. “We were able to realize this quickly among other things thanks to the fantastic endeavors of our employees and other departments such as Purchasing, and in particular our colleagues who deal with regulatory matters,” reports Martin Fritzsche, head of ARLANXEO’s pilot plant in Dormagen.

The disinfectant is based on a formula of the World Health Organization (WHO) which has been approved by Germany’s Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA). The solution contains 80 percent ethanol by volume, which means it is effective against the coronavirus.

The first part delivery to the town of 700 liters has been presented to Dormagen’s fire and rescue service. “We are very grateful for this donation from ARLANXEO. Among others, the disinfectant will go to the schools in Dormagen, as there is a very great need for it there as schools begin to reopen and in view of the necessary hygiene measures,” explains Bernd Eckhardt, head of Dormagen’s fire and rescue service. Some of the disinfectant has also gone to Realschule Hackenbroich high school, with which ARLANXEO maintains a successful school cooperation.
